A child growing up in a city may never have learnt to identify a vegetable in the supermarket.
We live in an increasingly urban and technological world. The demands of everyday life distance both us and our children from practices that are essential to a healthy and sustainable life.
A balanced diet, physical activity, hygiene and the conservation of resources are subjects we all know, but rarely teach in a way that children can truly understand and internalise.
How can we create a space where children discover, through play, what it means to live in a healthy and responsible way?
The Challenge
Knowing is not enough.
Information does not create habits. Experience does.
Everyone knows they should eat better, exercise more and save water. But knowledge without experience does not create habits.
A child who hears “eat your vegetables because they’re good for you” does not respond in the same way as a child who chooses the vegetables at the supermarket, prepares them in the kitchen and serves them at the table.
The difference lies in the experience. And that was the difference Alcateia set out to create.
The Vision
You cannot teach healthy living through a poster.
You teach it through a choice.
The premise was simple: transform the most important themes of healthy living into spaces for play and discovery. Each child would not be a pupil, but the protagonist of their own healthy life.
At Healthy Eco Village, children became the chef, the athlete, the explorer and the guardian of the planet. They learned by doing. And they took what they had learned with them.
The Solution
An entire village of healthy choices.
Alcateia designed and produced an immersive, play-based educational experience with eight interactive activity zones. It can be installed in an area of 150 to 200 m² and adapted to different contexts and spaces.
The experience began at the Eco-van, the gateway to this new world. From the vehicle inspired by a classic camper van, children moved on to the Supermarket, where they learned to identify healthy and unhealthy foods; the Food Wheel, where they played with the portions of the food pyramid; the Health Puzzle, where they discovered how different foods affect the body; the Personal Hygiene area, focused on dental care, water conservation and body care; the Restaurant, with a kitchen, laundry area, waste separation and composting; the Gym, with activities for all preferences; and finally the Workshop, where each child built their own healthy living pyramid to take home.
All educational content, menus and nutritional information were validated by specialists in each field, ensuring the scientific accuracy of the experience.
The Impact
We do not measure success by visitor numbers.
We measure it by the habits children take home with them.
Each child left with their own healthy living pyramid, built with their own hands and bringing together everything they had learned. A keepsake to put on the wall and a reminder of the right choices to make.
The scientific validation of the content by specialists in nutrition, physical activity and sustainability ensured that what the children took home was accurate, useful and applicable to everyday life.
