Shopping centres face an ongoing challenge: attracting families beyond the act of shopping.
Traditional children’s play areas, inflatables and ball pits no longer surprise. Parents are looking for something more. Experiences that entertain, educate and make the journey worthwhile. Experiences that bring them back.
How can we create a space with its own concept, capable of driving footfall, increasing dwell time and leaving a lasting impression?
The Challenge
The oceans are dying.
Children can still help save them.
The oceans cover 71% of the Earth and are under threat. Pollution, climate change and overfishing threaten ecosystems that are essential to all life on the planet.
The usual response is to inform. Present data. Raise awareness through text. But information alone does not change behaviour.
What changes behaviour is a moment. The moment a child fishes a plastic bottle out of a pretend ocean and immediately understands what it represents.
That is the moment Alcateia set out to create.
The Vision
You cannot truly teach what cannot be felt.
The premise was clear: educate without feeling like a lesson. Entertain without being empty.
A child entering Our Ocean is not a visitor. They are an explorer. They have not come to see an exhibition. They have come to experience an underwater adventure. Every activity was designed so that the ocean was not simply the setting, but the main character.
Learning through play. Total immersion. Content developed with rigour. The concept was designed as a modular experience, allowing it to adapt to spaces of different sizes without losing coherence.
The ocean was not the theme. It was the place.
The Solution
An ocean within a space.
Alcateia designed and produced an immersive educational exhibition about the oceans and the preservation of marine life, created for installation in retail and cultural spaces, as well as at events.
The floor was a blue ocean. The walls became a coral reef. The giant magenta whale was simultaneously a sculpture, an activity station and a photo opportunity. Every element was designed to balance visual impact with educational purpose.
The space included a series of interactive experience zones: an entrance portal, a shark arch, the magenta whale, a yellow submarine, a lighthouse, a game involving fishing plastic out of the ocean, a creative area for origami and marine-themed painting, and educational panels about turtles, coral reefs and pollution.
The Impact
We do not measure success by visitor numbers.
We measure it in the questions children ask on the way home.
The impact of Our Ocean lived on in the behaviour the experience inspired. In the child who went home and asked to use less plastic. In the adult who realised they, too, still had much to learn.
Visitors took home 3,000 origami pieces. A paper memory that each child carried with them.
Clients repeated the project in consecutive years. The clearest sign that it worked.
The format is available to be staged again in the same spaces.
Would you like to bring Our Ocean to your space?
The ocean that fits any space is ready for yours.
Our Ocean is a touring format with its own concept, scenography, narrative and operating model. It was created for shopping centres, local authorities, festivals and brands looking to turn environmental education into an experience people will not forget.
